Sharply Angled Contemporary Home Truly Shines in Connecticut

It’s all about the angles—and triangles—at this contemporary home in Connecticut. Blending passive solar design with a contemporary flair, it’s angled for a reason.

And to understate the case, “The home really has a cool design,” says the listing agent, Gary Crawford of eRealty Advisors, Inc.

From the radiant flooring to the solar panels and heated driveway, this four-bedroom home in Sharon, CT, was designed with energy efficiency in mind.

It’s on the market for $589,777, and its show-stopping looks have proven to be a conversation starter for every prospective buyer. Thankfully, Crawford knows the backstory.

“The current owners are the second owners of the home. It was originally designed by Charles Woods, who was a student of Frank Lloyd Wright,” he says. “It’s a complete earth-sheltered house that was designed as a passive solar contemporary.”

Passive solar homes are designed to offer a constant temperature inside while remaining environmentally friendly. Quite apart from the appeal of this feature, the location is a huge plus.

It sits on a large, 10.5-acre lot located in a neighborhood along the Appalachian Trail near the Housatonic River, just 5 miles from the Mohawk ski area. For folks who love the outdoors, this place offers plenty of options—and that includes just listening to the sound of a burbling brook on the property.

“There is a brook that goes through the back,” Crawford adds. “You can hear the running water, and the back of the property abuts preservation land. So you can relax and not have to worry about that land being developed. The home is meant for someone who is looking for peace and quiet.”

Finished in 1989, the home offers over 3,000 square feet of interior space. Wood and natural light can be found in abundance, but a new owner will probably want to spiff up the home’s decor and finishes.

“There are many angles inside the home that keep it nice and bright along with the natural wood,” says Crawford. “With its unique design, there are lots of cathedral ceilings and exposed beams as well.”

One luxury perk that’s nearly a necessity in this part of the country? A heated driveway.

As Crawford told us, “The house was built on a steep hill, so without the heated driveway, it would be disastrous to get up and down with the snow and cold temperatures.”

The current owners had big plans, but have several other projects going on simultaneously. As a result, they decided to put the angular abode on the market instead, after making a few tweaks of their own.

“They were going to fix the property up, do a large renovation, and keep the home as an Airbnb,” Crawford said. “That was their vision, but they also have a lot of other projects going on. So they did some carpentry and painting on the interior and updated the radiant heating.”

The agent says interest in the eco-friendly home has been steady, and that it’s now pending sale.

“There is an offer on the house now from a movie producer couple who lives in L.A.,” he says. “They were looking for a second home to get away from it all—somewhere that offered a peaceful environment. Whoever ends up [with] it will be someone who is looking for a unique architectural build.”
